Lady Gophers state run ends one point short of Columbia

High School Basketball

The Green City Lady Gophers lost in heart-breaking fashion on Saturday night, as the Prairie Home Lady Panthers, led by 31 points from senior Shianne Rhorer, clipped Green City 61-60 in a Class 1 state quarterfinal broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3.  The game was played at Salisbury High School.

Green City, playing against a squad with only six players, had the most difficulty keeping players in the game, with two Lady Gophers fouling out of the contest.  Freshman phenom Brooke Littell led Green City with 23 points.  Katelyn Connor had 12 and Nikita Powell 11 for GCHS.  For Prairie Home, guard Rachel Distler had 14 points, while Kristen Peterson had 10.

The Lady Gophers had a shot to hit a basket to advance to the Show-Me Showdown, but were unable to connect on a shot late in regulation, allowing Prairie Home to dribble out the final seconds.  Green City finishes the 2016-2017 campaign with a record of 20-6, and a state quarterfinal appearance.

Prairie Home will face Walnut Grove in a Class 1 state semifinal on Thursday afternoon at Mizzou Arena.
