Lady Hornets move to 2-0 with 55-44 win at Savannah

The Chillicothe Lady Hornets, on Tuesday night, faced the always daunting task of defeating the host school in their own tournament.  Despite giving up the first four points of the contest, Darren Smith’s team went on a 14-1 run to finish the first quarter, and moved to 2-0 on the season with a 55-44 win over the Savannah Lady Savages, in the quarterfinals of the Savannah Tournament.

Hunter Keithley led CHS with 17 points while Kennedie Kieffer added 14.  Grace Stites had 13 points for the Savages.  The win sends Chillicothe into a Thursday night (8:30) semifinal with #2 seed Staley, a 76-21 winner over Bishop LeBlond.

On the top half of the Savannah bracket, Smithville beat the Benton JV 55-24 while William Chrisman was a 45-29 winner over Maryville.

The boys quarterfinals will be played tonight (Wednesday night), starting with #1 seed Hogan Prep against LeBlond at 4 o’clock.  The Platte County Pirates play Benton at 5:30, with Chillicothe dueling with #2 seed Maryville at 7 o’clock.  The night finishes with #3 seed Smithville opposite Savannah at 8:30.

The Putnam County girls and boys lost in pool play to Clark County in the Tri-Rivers Tournament in Queen City on Tuesday night.  The Lady Midgets fell by a score of 53-23, while the PC boys came up short by a score of 62-55.  Scotland County and Knox County split a doubleheader in pool play, with the Knox County boys winning 47-42, while the Scotland County girls took a 59-45 win.

The Milan girls and boys will be in action tonight (Wednesday night) at Schuyler County, with the Wildcats playing Scotland County at 6 o’clock, and the Lady ‘Cats battling Scotland County at 7:30.  The boys game will be in the high school gym and the girls game at the middle school gym.  The Schuyler County boys play Putnam County at 7:30, while the Schuyler County girls play Putnam County at 6 o’clock tonight.

On Tuesday, December 4th, the Trenton Bulldogs play at Marceline, with the Lady Tigers looking to be one of the tougher opponents for the Lady Bulldogs in the early season.  Marceline, a #2 seed in the Glasgow Tournament, hammered Slater on Tuesday night, 64-30.  The Marceline boys had a rougher time of things, with the #7 seed losing to top seeded Slater 84-29.  The Northeast of Cairo girls drilled Westran 73-8, while the Fayette boys handled Westran 66-43, all on Tuesday night.

The Linn County girls and boys picked up wins in the Northwestern Tournament quarterfinal round on Tuesday night, with the Lady Mustangs clipping Northwestern 43-41, while the #1 seeded Mustang boys rolled, beating Bucklin/Macon County 90-17.  The Hale girls cruised past B/MC 60-22, and the Brunswick boys took a 58-49 triumph over the Hale Cardinals.

Both Meadville teams are in action tonight at the Mendon gym, with the #3 seed Lady Eagles playing Brunswick at 4:30, while the #3 seed Eagle boys play Keytesville at 5:45.  The Higbee girls play Keytesville at 7, followed by the Northwestern boys against Higbee at 8:15.

From the Novinger Tournament on Tuesday night, the #8 seeds from Newtown-Harris had a rough time against the top seeds in the event, with the Lady Tigers falling to Madison 67-11 and the Newtown-Harris boys losing to LaPlata 66-9.  The Brashear girls won the 4 vs 5 match with LaPlata 53-52, while the Madison boys downed Brashear 58-58.

The Wednesday night quarterfinal games from Novinger High School will be the Green City Lady Gophers against Novinger at 4 PM, Green City boys against Atlanta at 5:20, the Grundy R-5 Lady Panthers against Atlanta at 6:40, with the host Novinger boys playing Grundy R-5 at 8 o’clock.

The Tri-County girls, on Tuesday night, bounced back from a season-opening loss at state-ranked Green City, beating Breckenridge, 72-32.  Jadan Almond had 19 points and Bailee Hoover 15 for the Lady Mustangs, who host North Harrison on Friday night as part of an HDC Conference girls/boys varsity doubleheader.
