Lady Midgets, Bulldogs take season-opening team wins at Early Bird Relays

The Putnam County girls edged Trenton 149-147 to take the team title at Thursday afternoon’s Early Bird Relays at C.F. Russell Stadium in Trenton. The Trenton boys, with 146 points, took the team title in their own event, with Carrollton and Milan tying for the runner-up spot with 94 points.

Individual champions were Carrollton freshman Mackenzie Brown (4′ 10″) and Milan senior Mauricio Curiel (6′ 2″) in the high jump.  Trenton’s Whitley Richman finished second in the girls division.  In the pole vault, Putnam County junior Jaylee Knowles went 9′ 6″ to take the girls title, joined by Gallatin senior Tanner Johnson, with an effort of 11′ 6″.  Trenton’s Isaac Harris finished third in the boys division, while Mason Hooyman and Cassidy Trump finished 2nd and 3rd for the Trenton Lady Bulldogs, picking up a combined 14 points for the host school.

Shayla Woodside earned the title in the girls long jump for Trenton, with the Lady Bulldog senior leaping 15 feet, 3 1/4 inches.  Austin Burkeybile made it a Bulldog long jump sweep, winning the boys division at 20 feet, 1 1/4 inches.  Calvin Berwanger of Princeton was second.  

In the discus toss, winners were Carrollton senior Abigael Sullivan (97′ 3 1/2″) and Trenton sophomore Jadan Whitney (126′ 4 1/2″).  Trenton Lady Bulldog freshman Kendall Crowley was runner-up.  Sullivan doubled up in the shot put, with a winning toss of 30 feet, 7 1/2 inches.  Putnam County senior Ryan Valentine in the boys shot put winner, at 45 feet, 3 inches.  Trenton’s Jadan Whitney was third.

In the relay races, the Putnam County girls and Princeton boys took the 4 by 800 races.  The Putnam County girls and Carrollton boys claimed the 4 by 200 events.  The Trenton Lady Bulldogs (Thelma Guerrero, Abbie Shuler, Lexi Whitaker, Mason Hooyman) took the 4 by 100 relay, with the Trenton boys (Wyatt Whitlle, Matthew Sibbit, Brian Ewing, Austin Burkeybile) winning the 4 by 100.  The THS Lady Bulldogs 4 by 400 team (Guerrero, Shayla Woodside, McKayla Blackburn, Tenna Roberts) went 4:39.59 to win, joined by the Carrollton Trojan 4 by 400 boys relay team in the “winner’s circle”.

In the hurdles races, Trenton’s Whitley Richman and Matthew Sibbit swept the short (100 meter girls, 110 meter boys) races for the Bulldog teams. Richman added a win in the girls 300 hurdles (54.22 seconds), along with Milan junior Colten Fordyce (44.34 seconds).  Trenton’s Carson Radcliff was runner-up in the boys race.

In the sprints, Princeton’s Jaelyn Thomas and Milan’s Jesus Lopez won the 100 meter dash.  Putnam County’s Hannah Meyers and Carrollton’s Sean Puffpaff took the 200 meter titles.  Princeton’s Thomas and Harrison Smith won the 400 meter races.  Trenton senior Tenna Roberts ran 2:47.02 to win the girls 800, with Milan junior Daniel Anaya taking the boys 800 (2:16.98), with Cole Schilling of Trenton as runner-up.  The 1600 meter runs went to Milan sophomore Vanessa Stimpson (6:20.25) and Trenton sophomore Zane Rottman (5:02.90).  Tenna Roberts and McKayla Blackburn of Trenton High School finished 2 and 3 in the girls 1600.  Logan Dunkin and Preston Thomas of Princeton finished second and third in the boys 1600.  

Carrollton senior Cierra Famuliner and Princeton sophomore Logan Dunkin won the 3200 meter races.  Bethany Bailey of Gallatin and Ayden Wayne of Gallatin were the runners-up.
