Green City High School junior Brooke Littrell and Milan High School freshman Cady Pauley matched one another basket for basket on Monday night, both finishing with a Milan Tournament all-time scoring record of 57 points, in a 92-86 victory for the Lady Gophers in pool play on the first night of the annual Milan event.
Littrell, a Truman State University basketball verbal commit, led her squad to the victory, with shooting guard Delaney Embree contributing 17 points. Pauley, the latest freshman phenom in north-central Missouri’s circles, set a new career-high in points in her latest standout performance for the Lady ‘Cats.
The former individual scoring record of 47 points at the Milan Tournament was set by Mercer’s Sierra Michaelis, a University of Missouri former player and graduate. In addition to the Milan Tournament shared record, Milan’s Pauley broke the all-time state record for points scored in a game by a freshman, shattering the old record of 52 set by Elsberry High School’s Lisa Ellis. Pauley also broke the all-time state mark for points in a quarter with 28, breaking the old mark of 27 set by Osceola’s Karen Thies.
The win puts Green City in the driver’s seat for a spot in Saturday night’s Milan Tournament title game, as the Lady Gophers just need a victory over #6 seed Bucklin-Macon County on Tuesday night at 6 o’clock to advance. Milan’s girls, riding a two-game losing skid, will take on Bucklin-Macon County on Thursday night at 6 o’clock, with coverage on KTTN FM 92.3 of the pool play game.
The Milan boys trampled Bucklin-Macon County on Monday night, remaining unbeaten with a 76-16 win over the Bulldogs. The top-seeded Brashear Lady Tigers, behind 20 points from Averi Acton, downed Novinger 71-46, while the #2 seeded Linn County boys defeated Novinger soundly, 74-43, in an All-Tri County Conference pool play boys game.
