The Mercer girls are headed for the South Harrison Tournament this week with a #1 seed, a winning streak, and, following this week’s competition in Bethany, a challenging road trip to play Tina-Avalon next Monday.

On Monday, January 11th, KTTN Sports caught up with head coach Dan Owens.

While things are going well with the Mercer girls, 2020-2021 has brought challenges to a Mercer boys team that was already going to be inexperienced coming into the campaign.  While the Cardinals sit at 0-5, a positive COVID-19 test close to the team has quarantined both team and coaching staff through Friday, leaving the potential for any games this week in Bethany very much in doubt.  Last week, Mercer lost at Southwest Livingston.  Here is the interview with head coach Dan Martin.

The Grundy R-V Lady Panthers had an 0-3 week to begin 2021, falling to a mark of 2-7 on the season.  A winnable game at Hardin-Central on Monday, January 4th slipped through Grundy R-V’s hands, 43-41.  The following night, the Lady Panthers lost at Linn County 47-32, before the offense struggled in a 52-15 HDC Conference loss in Galt to North Harrison on Friday.

With the Milan Tournament approaching, including a Monday night game against #2 seed Green City, we spoke Monday night, January 11th with head coach Ty Stilwell.

While the girls program found scoreboard difficulties, the Panther boys team has surged into the New Year, starting 3-0 out of the blocks with convincing victories over Hardin-Central (65-31), Linn County (60-44) and North Harrison (84-57).

As a #5 seed in the Milan Tournament, the Panthers will take on Novinger in a quarterfinal contest on Wednesday night at 6:15, with coverage on KTTN FM 92.3.  A win would likely send Grundy R-V into a semifinal with #1 seed Green City, one of only two teams (Winston) to beat the Panthers this season.

Ty Stilwell also serves as boy’s basketball coach for the Grundy R-V/Newtown-Harris cooperative.
