Mercer Cardinals take Meadville Tourney semifinals, bitter cold takes title opportunities away

High School Basketball

The Mercer girls and boys, in impressive fashion, claimed semifinal victories on Saturday afternoon at Meadville High School, moving into the championship games of the weather-delayed Meadville Tournament.

The Mercer boys, in perhaps their biggest statement win of the season, beat Class 1 #9 ranked Meadville on the Eagles home floor, 57-50, while the #1 seeded Lady Cardinals continued their hot surge in 2019, hammering Meadville 65-31.

The Northwestern boys downed Linn County in the other boys semifinal showdown, 71-59, with the Tina-Avalon girls cruising to a win over Northwestern 67-32.

Last week’s snowfall and ice had pushed back the Meadville Tournament third place and championship games to Wednesday, January 30th, however, the frigid cold temperatures cancelled school nearly region-wide, and, as of Tuesday afternoon, cancelled all four games scheduled for the Meadville gym on Wednesday evening.  The games, according to Meadville Athletic Director Drew Nier, will not be made up.

In the consolation championship games at Meadville, played on Saturday evening, the Hale Cardinals swept their competition, with the Lady Cardinals taking down Linn County 44-33, while the Hale boys were victorious over Tina-Avalon 60-34.

The Chillicothe girls and boys basketball teams fell short in their efforts to win the Cameron Tournament championships on Saturday afternoon, with the Smithville Lady Warriors beating the Lady Hornets, 53-40.  The Maryville boys were impressive in beating Tim Cool’s Chillicothe boys squad, 64-35.
