Milan opens 2017 with back-to-back losses at Marceline Tournament

High School Basketball

The Milan boys suffered a tough-fought 41-39 loss to the South Shelby Cardinals on Tuesday night, in the quarterfinal round of the Marceline Hoops Classic.  Milan held a 39-36 lead within the final minute of regulation, but the combination of baskets and free throws by Dylan Boling and Alec Patterson, combined with the inability of the Wildcats to reel in a defensive rebound, cost the Wildcats in their second consecutive loss.

The defeat drops Milan into the consolation semifinals, and a meeting with Bucklin-Macon County on Thursday afternoon at 5:30.  BMC struggled against top-seeded Glasgow on Tuesday night, blasted by the Yellowjackets 84-32.

On Monday night, the Meadville Eagles strong defense sent Drew Nier’s team into the Marceline semifinals, with Meadville claiming a 45-17 win over Bevier.  Meadville will play the host Marceline Tigers on Wednesday night at 8:30 in the boys semifinal round.  The Tigers survived upset-minded Schuyler County on Monday night, 54-52.

The Milan girls struggled in their quarterfinal against South Shelby on Monday night, falling 50-24.  The loss sends the Lady ‘Cats to a consolation semifinal meeting with Bucklin-Macon County on Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock.  BMC lost to Glasgow on Monday night 43-17.

On the top half of the girls bracket, #1 seed Schuyler County walloped Bevier on Tuesday afternoon, 76-10, sending the Lady Rams into the matchup with #5 Meadville.  In a mild upset, the Lady Eagles bounced host Marceline out of their own tournament on Tuesday night, winning 54-52.  The Schuyler County vs. Meadville match will be Thursday night at 7 o’clock, with Bevier matching up with Marceline in the consolation girls semifinals, Thursday at 4:00 PM.
