Milan survives Johnson’s three-point shooting, improves to 22-2 with 63-60 win over Mercer

High School Basketball

The Cardinals of Mercer led Class 2 state-ranked Milan at the half, and picked up six three-point shots and team-high 20 points from guard Jonathan Johnson, but the upset bid of the HDC squad from Mercer came up just short on Monday night, in a 63-60 Wildcat victory, heard on Hot Country Z 101.7.

Hunter Shipley, saddled with foul trouble in the second half, finished with 19 points for Mercer, now 15-6 on the season, heading into a conference road test at Gilman City on Tuesday night.

For the Wildcats, playing without injured starting guard Quinn Doak (separated shoulder), Ryan Dabney led the way with 25 points, while Hunter Shaw had 16.

The girls game started very well for the Lady Cardinals, as Mercer ripped off 14 straight first-quarter points to open the evening.  However, as the Mercer offense slumped, Milan’s Evelyn Castro led the Lady ‘Cats back.  By the second quarter, Milan had rallied to a tie, and the Lady ‘Cats controlled the second half, winning by a score of 59-46.  Genesis Sarabia had 17 points for Milan.  Esabel Holt led Mercer with 13 points.
