Oregon State and Washington State are facing uncertainty and challenges as the landscape of college sports undergoes significant changes. The reshuffling of conference affiliations and the potential collapse of the Pac-12 has left these two schools searching for stability and a place to call home.

Both schools are land-grant universities located in true college towns – Pullman and Corvallis – with a small-town feel of community. They have a long history of competing in the Pac-12 and are now grappling with the potential loss of that affiliation.

Oregon State recently unveiled a major renovation to its Reser Stadium, costing over $160 million, which brought significant upgrades to the facility. However, the excitement surrounding the renovations is tempered by the uncertainty of the future conference alignment.

Washington State, on the other hand, is already facing financial challenges. The school invested heavily in athletic facilities, anticipating TV revenue from the Pac-12 media rights deal. However, the expected financial benefits did not materialize as hoped, and the Cougars are now dealing with a significant deficit in their athletic department budget.

Both schools find themselves in a difficult position as they navigate the changing landscape of college sports. While some other Pac-12 schools are securing new conference affiliations, Oregon State and Washington State are left searching for stability and a way forward. The uncertainty surrounding their future conference alignment adds an extra layer of complexity to their efforts to provide for their student-athletes and maintain competitive athletics programs.
