The District 14 championships were won by the Pattonsburg boys and Worth County girls on Saturday, in a doubleheader from Eagleville broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7.

In the opener, the Worth County girls locked up with the Mercer girls in a tight, hard-fought, low-scoring affair, with forward Jessica Badell scoring 22 points to spur the Grand River Conference member Lady Tigers to a 33-29 win, ending Mercer’s season at 18-4, and sending Worth County into a Class 1 sectional game at the St. Joseph Civic Arena (Tuesday at 4:45 PM) against District 13 champion Wellington-Napoleon.

Mercer freshman Tori Meinecke fought through foul trouble to lead the Lady Cardinals with 11 points, with Morgan Eastin adding six points.

The Pattonsburg boys withstood a stern Worth County rally late in the third quarter that gave the Tigers a one-point lead heading into the final eight minutes, as PHS controlled the final stanza with a 22-9 advantage, winning the District 14 title with a 63-53 win over their GRC West rivals.  Cameron Jones had 18 points for the Panthers, with Carter Crone adding 15, Connor Ireland 13, and Patrick Cowley 10 points, as the Panthers improve to 21-5.

Worth County, ending the season with a mark of 12-10, had 15 points from Caleb Parman, 14 from Alex Rinehart, and 13 points from Jackson Runde.

The win sends Pattonsburg into the Class 1 sectionals, and a meeting with nearby rival Winston at 3 o’clock on Tuesday afternoon from the St. Joseph Civic Arena.  That game can be heard live on Hot Country Z 101.7, with Tom Johnson on the play-by-play call.
