Polo Panthers win Osborn Tournament quarterfinals, play in semifinal round tonight

The Polo girls and boys basketball teams are into the Osborn Tournament semifinals, after snaring a pair of wins in Tuesday night action from the OHS gym.

The Lady Panthers took a 43-29 win over Osborn, sending PHS into a semifinal showdown with top-seeded Dekalb, scheduled for a 4:30 tip on Thursday afternoon.

In the other girls semifinal from Osborn, the Pattonsburg Lady Panthers will challenge the Stewartsville Lady Cardinals.  Stewartsville advanced on Tuesday night with a 36-28 win over the Winston Lady Redbirds.  The Pattonsburg vs. Stewartsville semifinal will tip at 7:30.

The Polo boys, seeded #3 at Osborn, claimed a 61-40 win over the DeKalb Tigers on Tuesday night, matching Polo with Stewartsville in a 6 o’clock semifinal on Thursday night.  In the quarterfinal win, Polo’s James Fleener had 28 points to lead the Panther charge.  The heavy favorite, second-ranked and #1 seed Winston will play Pattonsburg in a 9 o’clock boys semifinal.  Pattonsburg earned its spot opposite the unbeaten Redbirds with a 53-32 quarterfinal win on Tuesday night against Union Star, with the Panthers paced by 23 points from Brett Curtis.

One of the scheduled consolation semifinals on Wednesday night at Osborn was not played, as the host Lady Wildcats had to forfeit their game against Union Star.  Winston beat the DeKalb junior varsity 44-19, behind 16 points from Sophie Pliley, and 10 each from Shelby Mason and Josie McFee.  Winston will play Union Star in the girls consolation final.

The Union Star boys took a 41-37 consolation round win against Osborn, sending USHS into a consolation final against DeKalb, as the Tigers rolled past the Winston junior varsity on Wednesday night, 56-15.
