Princeton advances to sectionals with district title win over Worth County

The Princeton Lady Tigers are headed back to the Class 1 softball sectional round, after a 9-1 victory on Saturday night over the Worth County Lady Tigers.

Princeton, the champions of District 16, will travel to Pattonsburg on Wednesday night to play the District 15 champion Pattonsburg Lady Panthers in a 5:30 first pitch on KTTN FM 92.3.  Pattonsburg won District 15 with an 11-0 win over Tri-County on Tuesday night, followed by a 6-0 shutout of Albany on Thursday night.

Princeton, in the District 16 tournament played at North Harrison High School in Eagleville, beat North Mercer in the Thursday night semifinal round 9-4, before the 9-1 win over Worth County.  Worth County, in the semifinal round, shutout the host North Harrison Shamrocks, 5-0.

Other Class 1 sectionals on Wednesday night from the region will be Canton hosting LaPlata; Atlanta hosting Braymer; and North Andrew traveling to Maysville.

LaPlata claimed the District 10 title with a 4-1 triumph over Schuyler County on Saturday afternoon, with Atlanta routing Linn County for the District 11 title, 11-2 on Friday night.

In a high-scoring District 12 title game, Braymer defeated Tina-Avalon 9-6.  In an-all Grand River Conference battle for the District 13 championship, Maysville scraped by Polo, winning 6-5.  North Andrew, the champions of the GRC’s Western Division, cruised to a 13-2 win over Stanberry for the District 14 title.

Marceline spoiled the hopes of the host Putnam County Lady Midgets in the Class 2, District 6 championship game, with the Lady Tigers moving into the state quarterfinals with a 7-2 win on Saturday afternoon.  Marceline, in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday night, will play at Clark County, after the Lady Indians won the District 5 crown, 7-3 over Highland.

The KCI Conference’s Mid-Buchanan Dragons won Class 2, District 7, with a 6-1 win over Lathrop.  The Dragons, in the state quarterfinals, will host the Sherwood Lady Indians, who took the District 8 title with a 1-0 shutout of Carrollton on Saturday afternoon.

Chillicothe will play at Holden in the Class 3 quarterfinal round, after the Lady Hornets, playing on their home turf at Danner Park, won the District 8 title on Saturday, downing Kirksville 2-1.  Holden won the District 7 title on Thursday night, outlasting Pleasant Hill 3-2 in eight innings.
