Putnam County’s district run ends with loss to streaking Panthers

High School Basketball

The Salisbury Panthers have run their winning streak to 21 straight, with a dominating 76-46 win over the Grand River Conference’s Putnam County Midgets, in the Class 2, District 7 boys championship game on Saturday night.

Early in the season, the Midgets rode the brilliant scoring of senior forward Calvin Heidenwith to try to stay in the game, but the Panthers superior balance gave Salisbury a 24-11 lead, before a Tanner Bondy basket (first Midget points scored by someone either than Heidenwith) pulled Putnam County within 24-13.

The lead ballooned to 17 points by early in the second quarter, and despite a 10 point run midway through the second quarter that cut the lead to 30-23, the Midgets struggled to find consistent footing to stay in the contest.

The high-flying tandem of Garrett Francis and Evan Fessler led Salisbury, with 26 and 19 points respectively, as the Lewis and Clark squad moved into the Class 2 playoffs.  Heidenwith led Putnam County with 25 points.  Salisbury’s opponent in the sectional round will be conference rival Harrisburg, Wednesday night at 5:45.
