Putnam County’s Heidenwith, by air and by ground, leads Midgets to 36-7 win over Milan

High School Football

Putnam County quarterback Calvin Heidenwith had 151 yards rushing with two touchdowns, and added 146 yards through the air, including another pair of scores, leading the Midgets to their first victory of the season, 36-7 on Friday night over visiting Milan, in a varsity football contest broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3.

Milan did decently on the ground, amassing 182 yards, but the Wildcats offense struggled to get points on the board against their long-time border rival to the north.

Putnam County defensive lineman Gus Valentine continued to perform with all-Grand River Conference ability, recording 14 tackles for the Midgets.  Tanner Bondy had 17 tackles, while workhorse back Carson Quint had 87 yards rushing and a touchdown, while split end Grant Sands had both touchdown catches from Heidenwith.

Friday night’s game added to a festive week in Unionville, with the Putnam County Fair coinciding with the Midgets heated affair against Milan.  Putnam County, with the win, improves to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the Grand River Conference.  Milan, still in search of its first win, falls to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

This year’s Milan / Putnam County game was played in Week #4, instead of at the end of the season, due to the scheduling format utilized by the GRC. The seven-game schedule of opponents, in future years will remain in the same order, but will flip one week forward in 2017, leaving the Putnam County at Milan game next year, for Week #5.  This year’s Week #9 opponent will flip to the Week #3 opponent for GRC schools.

Putnam County will take on fellow 1-1 conference foe Princeton, at Princeton, this Friday night at 7:00 on KTTN FM 92.3.  Milan will play at Trenton on Friday night at 7:00 on Hot Country Z 101.7 and KGOZ-TV.

Other GRC Eastern Division scores from Friday, September 9th were Maysville 48, South Harrison 14 and Polo 36, Gallatin 21.
