Texas/Oklahoma renamed back to “Red River Rivalry”

The iconic college football matchup between Texas and Oklahoma, played every year at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas amid the Texas State Fair, has a new title sponsor – Allstate. With this sponsorship comes the revival of the beloved name “Red River Rivalry” for the game, replacing the less popular “Red River Showdown” used since 2014. The game was previously known as the “Red River Shootout” before the name change in 2005.

The rivalry between the two teams dates all the way back to 1900, and the upcoming meeting on October 7th will mark the 119th matchup between the Longhorns and Sooners. Notably, this will also be the last meeting between the two schools as members of the Big 12, as both Texas and Oklahoma are set to move to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) starting in 2024.

The Allstate Red River Rivalry will be broadcast on ABC, giving fans a chance to witness this historic clash between the two powerhouse teams. The series’ historical record currently favors Texas, with 63 wins against Oklahoma’s 50, along with 5 ties.

Oklahoma’s athletics director, Joe Castiglione, expressed excitement for the revival of the “Rivalry” name, recognizing that this annual matchup with Texas holds over a century of tradition and significance for both programs.
