Trenton aims for GRC title defense, as practice for ’17 gridiron season cranks up

The Trenton Bulldogs boast a football team that, while low of numbers, returns strong line play on both sides of the line of scrimmage, as Coach Brandon Boswell started practice this (Monday) morning for the 2017 season.

Thirty-three young men were on the practice field for the Bulldogs, although that number could rise towards the 37 mark.  A key contributor to this year’s squad, Colton Colston, will miss at least the non-conference games for THS, as he completes a basic training program:

In 2016, the Bulldogs, in their first year as a member of the Grand River Conference, earned a share of the GRC title, finishing with a mark of 6-1.  A Week 9 loss at Gallatin, combined with a Maysville victory over the Milan Wildcats, gave the Wolverines a share of the crown, despite Trenton having beat Mark Cole’s team head-to-head 42-12 in a Week 8 showdown at C.F. Russell Stadium.

Trenton’s strength appears to be anchored with a defensive line, anchored by returning senior Mason Owen and junior Jadan Whitney, that should be among the best in northwest Missouri:

With the major reason being conference affiliation, Trenton’s jamboree with Maysville and South Harrison, having occurred on the Friday night before the season opener for many years, will not happen in 2017, with the Bulldogs now going to alternate plans:

Trenton’s regular season opener will be at C.F. Russell Stadium against the Lathrop Mules on Friday night, August 18th.  A season ago, Trenton lost at Lathrop in a Week 1 match-up that took two days to complete due to a thunderstorm delay.  Trenton earned revenge on the Mules with a district quarterfinal triumph later in the season.  The Bulldogs first road game will take place against a strong Lexington Minutemen squad on August 25th.  The conference opener will be at Putnam County on September 1st, followed by the GRC home opener against the Princeton Tigers on September 8th.
