Trenton shows continued improvement and fight, but falls to Chillicothe on “Senior Night”

In a hard-fought competitive dual held at Trenton High School on Tuesday night, the Chillicothe Hornets spoiled the host Bulldogs “Senior Night” with a 42-27 victory, but the night was not without its fair share of superlative performances by the up-and-coming Trenton squad.

Highlighting Trenton’s charges on Tuesday night was freshman Noah Lewis, who showed grit and determination in grabbing a pin over Zack Blixt of Chillicothe at 145 pounds.  Bulldog Head Coach Charlie Bacon commented, “Noah came out fired up and did not stop until he had the win. Noah was very evenly matched with his opponent from Chillicothe, but the difference between the win and loss was the fact that Noah knew the team was counting on him for the win. Noah out worked an opponent he probably wasn’t supposed to beat on paper, and ended up getting the pin. I am so proud of Noah for creating a moment that he or I will never forget!”

At 160 pounds, Trenton senior Drew Rorebeck picked up another victory in front of the partisan Bulldog faithful, using a cradle lock for a pin over From Reynolds.

One of the most competitive matches of the night came at 182 pounds, where Chillicothe’s Layne Burton, the #4 ranked wrestler in Class 2, picked up late match points in the third period to hold off a hard-charging effort from Trenton’s Jadan Whitney, in an 11-5 decision.

Bulldog freshman Mark Trump continues to show quick improvement for Trenton in every match he wrestles, and that trend continued on Tuesday night, with Trump, at 195 pounds, using a near-side cradle to pin the Hornets Matt Fallen.

Looking, according to Coach Bacon “the best I’ve ever seen him at 220”, Mason Owen dominated his match with Chillicothe’s Max Anderson, utilizing numerous take-downs to pick up points in quick succession, eventually securing a pin for the THS victory.

The heavyweight dual between Chillicothe’s Keagan Valdez and Trenton’s Cole Little was very tight, until one mistake late in the third period cost Little, as Valdez got the pin, and points for the Hornets.

Other Tuesday night results included forfeit wins for Chillicothe’s Colton Sewell at 113 pounds, Dean Adkins at 170 pounds, and Trenton’s Daniel Rodriguez at 126 pounds, a pin for Chillicothe’s Chase Minnick over Trenton’s Zane Rottman at 132 pounds, an 8-4 decision going to the Hornets Bryce Larson, over Eric Lovett, at 138 pounds, a pin for Chillicothe’s Joey Thompson (vs. Nick Wattenbarger) at 152 pounds, and a pin for Chillicothe’s Zach Boyles over Trenton’s Brenden Johnson at 120 pounds.

With Trenton now preparing for a Thursday night trip to Stanberry (quad with Stanberry, Rock Port, and North Andrew) and Saturday’s Grand River Conference Tournament at Trenton High School, Coach Bacon highlighted the positives of the night, saying “Overall I saw more positives than I had in past duals. Most of our kids wrestled very hard and gave it everything they had.”
