Trenton steamrolls Maysville, Lady Bulldogs run winning streak to six

High School Softball

Another lockdown performance from the circle by Ainsley Tolson was back by nine runs of offense, including a first-inning home run by Salem Croy, as the Trenton Lady Bulldog softball team hammered Maysville on Thursday night, 9-0, improving to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Grand River Conference.

In the visitors first, Maci Moore hit a two-out single for Trenton, with Croy supplying all the offense her team would need on a two-run shot to right-center, giving THS the early 2-0 edge.  Junior center fielder Lexi Whitaker, using her speed, pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 2nd inning, stealing second base and streaking home as the throw went into center field.

The lead ballooned to 5-0 in the third inning, on a two-run RBI single by Croy, scoring Mykah Hurley and Moore.  Courtesy runner Teya Cooksey scored on a Moore sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, with Trenton’s offense surging the lead to 9-0 with a three-spot in the 7th, as a single by junior McKayla Blackburn highlighted that outburst.

Tolson dominated the Wolverine starting lineup, holding Maysville scoreless over six innings of one-hit, shutout softball, picking up eight punchouts.  Blackburn finished up with a scoreless seventh.

Continuing to please Coach John Cowling is Trenton’s early season attention to detail, noting “Our pitching and defense remain the strength of our team.  Ainsley was strong again tonight.  It’s good to see Salem hitting the ball hard consistently right now.  Overall I think we’ve had a good first week to our season.”

Trenton will host the Princeton Lady Tigers on Tuesday night (5:30 PM) at Mark Griffin Memorial Field.  That contest can be heard on Hot Country Z 101.7 and KTTNSports.com, with Tom Johnson on the play-by-play call.

The Trenton JV lost at Maysville by a score of 6-1 on Thursday night.  The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but THS tied the game in the third as Chloe Harris tripled and scored on a passed ball.  From there, the Bulldog offense died out, while Maysville scored five runs in the home third for the winning margin.  Gracyn Rongey had a pair of singles and JilliAnn Nichols a base hit for the Lady Bulldogs.

Princeton fell at South Harrison by a score of 5-4, with Polo knocking off Gallatin 2-1, and Putnam County beating Milan, all in GRC East play, on Thursday night.  The Lady Midgets beat Milan, 11-1, with the only run for the Lady ‘Cats scoring on a solo home run by Katie Banner.

In the GRC West, Stanberry hammered Braymer 13-3 while Albany walloped Pattonsburg 17-1 and North Andrew took a 10-7 victory over King City.  In non-conference play, North Nodaway beat Worth County 9-8.
