The Trenton Lady Bulldog tennis team played some of its best and most thrilling action of the season on Thursday, doubling up the Kirksville Lady Tigers 6-3 in action from the Trenton High School courts.

Every varsity match proved to be competitive and lively, with the teams splitting six singles matches, but Trenton sweeping three doubles matches, including a heart-pounding 9-7 triumph for Morgan Dolan and Alaina Overton at #3 doubles over Maren Elmore and Abigail Ihnat.  At #2 doubles, the THS duo of Gwyneth Foster and Mallory Sole downed Gracie Riemenschneider and Alaysia Stremel-Slaughter 8-5, while Lexi Gott and Kendall Crowley of Trenton, at #1 doubles, had an easier time of things, in a 8-2 win over Christine Kuttenkuler and Kenzie Easley.

In singles play, Trenton’s wins came in the #1 match, with Gott downing Kuttenkuler 8-6, at #2, with Crowley defeating Riemenschneider 8-4, and at #5, with Dolan an 8-6 winner over Elmore.   For Kirksville, Kenzie Easley took down Gwyneth Foster in the #3 match 8-6, with, at #4 singles, Stremel-Slaughter grabbing an 8-6 win over Sole.  At #6 singles, Ihnat was an 8-3 victor over Trenton’s Overton.

The schools played six JV doubles matches on Thursday afternoon, with the Tigers winning four to Trenton’s two.  The Lady Bulldogs got a win from Baley Catron and Emilee Lovell (over Spurlin and Anther) 6-3, and Harley Hall and Kaylor Farris (over Johnson and Williams) 6-2.

Trenton Coach Tammy Ockenfels was thrilled with the Thursday night performance, telling KTTNSports.com, “I’m so proud of all of the girls!  They battled through the heat and pulled some close wins!  They are moving around the court better and getting stronger mentally!”

The Lady Bulldogs now begin preparations for a busy week, hosting Maryville on Monday and St. Joseph Lafayette on Tuesday, before playing in the Benton Tournament in St. Joseph on Wednesday, and going to Chillicothe on Thursday for a head-to-head rematch with a Hornet group that won at Trenton on September 9th by a score of 7-2.
