The Trenton Bulldog wrestling team struggled against the visiting Carrollton Trojans on Thursday night, falling by a final of 56-16, but managed a 42-31 victory over conference rival Maysville, opening the 2017 portion of their schedule in triangular action at Trenton High School.

Against Carrollton, Trenton’s points came from three wrestlers, with Mason Owen winning his 220 pound bout against Hayden Kilson by pin at 2:22, while Drew Rorebeck, at 160 pounds, took a 15-2 major decision over Hunter Johnson.  Jadan Whitney was a forfeit winner for the Bulldogs at 195 pounds.

At 120 pounds, Chase Wheeler (CHS) pinned Brendon Johnson (THS).  Cody Warner (CHS) took a 5-1 decision over Daniel Rodriguez (THS) at 126 pounds, with Andrew Hughes (CHS) pinning Zane Rottman (THS) at 132 pounds.

The match at 138 pounds ended with a 17-2 tech fall triumph for Cameron Wheeler over Eric Lovett.  At 145 pounds, Tyson Thomas of the Trojans pinned Noah Lewis of the Bulldogs at the 51 second mark.  At 182 pounds, Carrollton’s Gabe Frank pinned Trenton’s Mark Trump in 2 minutes and 47 seconds.

Trenton won five matches against Maysville by forfeit.  Heavyweight Cole Little, in addition to Jadan Whitney, Mason Owen, Drew Rorebeck, and Nick Wattenbarger won by that route.  Daniel Rodriguez, at 126 pounds, pinned Maysville’s Brendan Bertoncino in 1 minute and 32 seconds.  At 152 pounds, Trenton’s Noah Lewis pinned Jakob Wade in 1 minute and 27 seconds.

Maysville’s points against the Bulldogs came in forfeit wins for Zoie Sears (113 pounds) and  Kaleb Popplewell (145 pounds).  There was a double forfeit at 106 pounds.  At 120 pounds, Dylan Wade of the Wolverines pinned Brendon Johnson of the Bulldogs (3:44 mark).  Jared Eads of Maysville, wrestling in the 132 pound weight class, claimed a 17-3 major decision over Trenton’s Zane Rottman.  Dalton Wade of the Wolverines pinned Eric Lovett of the Bulldogs at 138 pounds (4:36).  At 182 pounds, Maysville’s Jake Post won by 8-5 decision over Mark Trump of THS.

Trenton Head Coach Charlie Bacon, in post-match comments, told KTTN/KGOZ that, “In the Carrolton dual we picked up 2 head to head wins from our usual guys who I can count on for points. Mason Owen started our night off with a pin over his Carrolton opponent. Mason looked great throughout the match and secured a couple of takedowns before he got the pin. Mason goes out and takes care of business whenever he steps on the mat. Drew Rorebeck picked up a very desisive 15-2 victory over his opponent after coming back from a knee injury before the break. Drew is another kid who is just mentally tough and gets the job done for us every time he takes the mat.

In the Maysville dual, the team had to rely on other sources for the team win. Maysville had some holes in their lineup in many of the spots we needed matches. Daniel Rodriguez came out and got a very big pin over his opponent. Daniel looked much better in his second match of the night. With the dual score very close, it was up to freshman Noah Lewis to seal the deal. Noah got taken down and turned to his back early in the match, but didn’t quit. I was so proud of the fact that Noah was able to fight off of his back and turned the table on his opponent to secure the pin. Noah learned a very important lesson tonight in that it pays to never give up because anything can happen in wrestling. I am really happy with the way Noah wrestled. The down side of the night was that Jadan Whitney, who is a kid that loves to perform in front of the home crowd didn’t get a match in the 2 duals.”
Trenton’s wrestlers are next in action on Thursday, January 12th, going to Marceline for a 6 o’clock quadrangular that includes the host Tigers, the Polo Panthers, and the Macon Tigers.
