The Grand River Conference

Wildcats, Lady Bulldogs open defense of GRC titles with home-court wins

High School Basketball

The Trenton girls and Milan boys were among basketball teams claiming victories on Tuesday night, with Grand River Conference play beginning with seven separate girls/boys varsity doubleheaders taking place across the region.  An eighth scheduled double-dip, Pattonsburg at Braymer, was postponed to a later date.

From Trenton High School, in action broadcast on KTTN 92.3 FM, the Trenton Lady Bulldogs saw an interior advantage over rival with the presence of junior starting forward Maci Moore against the undersized Princeton Lady Tigers.  Trenton went to Moore early and often in a career-high 34 point night for Moore, in a 59-36 victory.  Trenton is now 4-3 overall, and 1-0 in GRC play, while Princeton had a 3-game winning streak snapped, falling to 3-3 overall.

Here is Trenton Head Coach Kameron Cool:

Moore’s 34 point night was two points shy of the Trenton school record set by Lora Gooch.  Princeton, for the second consecutive game, was led by sophomore forward Lauren Krohn with 15 points, although Krohn’s night ended late in the fourth quarter, when she suffered a sprained ankle in front of her own bench.

The boys saw Princeton jump on the host Bulldogs early for a double-digit first quarter lead, only to see Trenton, on a 21-7 second quarter surge, cut the halftime lead to six.  However, the Tigers regained momentum after the break and slowly pulled away from THS, winning 71-49.  Behind a game-high 28 points from Preston Thomas, Princeton snapped a two-game losing skid and improved to 5-2 overall, 1-0 in the GRC, dropping Trenton to 1-6.  Austin Kelly had 13 points and Colton Estes 11 for PHS, while Chase Otto had 19 points and Gavin Roeder 13 for THS.

The Milan Wildcats opened conference play with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Polo Panthers on Tuesday night, winning the boys contest 74-40.  Eddie Gonzalez led the ‘Cats with 24 points, with Dre Morehead tallying 23, Ryan Dabney 11, and Hunter Shaw 10 points.  The Wildcats are 6-0 overall and 1-0 in GRC play.

In a back and forth affair in the opener at Milan, the Lady ‘Cats were able to take the win in a tightly-contested, back and forth affair with the Panthers, 51-45.
