The Trenton Lady Bulldogs received a superlative serving night, solid back-line play from freshman Ava Simpson, and strong nights from Olivia Roberts and Libby Fewins in a two-set first-round district win over the Penney Lady Hornets on Monday night, 25-19, 25-21 in volleyball action broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7.
In both sets, Trenton was able to break open a tight match with a run that sent Trenton’s points from the lower teens to upper teen’s, leading to advantages the #4 seed was able to hold onto.
Simpson, the only freshman on the THS varsity roster, had seven assists to pace the Lady Bulldogs attack, with Roberts adding three aces and three kills, and Fewins four aces, two assists, and two kills. Junior Evy McCullough had three kills to go with a pair of assists, while Allena Allen had two kills and two digs.
The win sends Trenton into Wednesday night’s semifinal round at Lathrop High School, for a meeting with the top-seeded Mid-Buchanan Lady Dragons. That match, starting at 5 o’clock, will be broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3 and KTTN from Tune-In Radio. The winner advances to the Class 2, District 16 championship game at 7:15.
In Wednesday night’s second semifinal, scheduled for a 6 o’clock start, the second-seeded East Buchanan Bulldogs play the host third-seeded Lathrop Lady Mules. East Buchanan beat South Harrison in two sets while the Mules beat rival Plattsburg by three sets in Monday’s quarterfinal action. IF Trenton advances to the final, that match would also be broadcast on Wednesday night, weather permitting, on KTTN FM 92.3.
