Chiefs announce “Red Friday” details

Kansas City Chiefs Local Sports NFL

In anticipation of the NFL Kickoff Game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions on Thursday, September 7, the Chiefs organization has made an exciting announcement regarding their traditional Red Friday celebration. This year, to align with the event, the celebration will be named Red Wednesday and is scheduled for Wednesday, September 6.

Continuing a decade-long tradition, the Chiefs will offer a limited-edition commemorative flag to mark this special occasion and raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Kansas City. The 2023 flag will showcase a unique championship design, paying tribute to the team’s triumph in Super Bowl LVII. The flag’s design will be unveiled on the Chiefs’ official social media platforms and website.

To give fans an opportunity to secure their flags ahead of time, a limited-quantity presale will begin at 1 p.m. CT on the Chiefs’ online shop. For just $10, fans can purchase the Red Wednesday flag during this presale period, and those who buy flags on Wednesday will also enjoy free shipping. After the presale, flags will be available for a minimum donation of $5 on Red Wednesday at over 135 McDonald’s restaurants in the Kansas City and St. Joseph areas. The net proceeds from these flag sales will be directed towards RMHC-KC. Hy-Vee locations and various public spots across the metro area will also carry the flags for purchase.

Furthermore, the Chiefs plan to make flags available for $10 on shop.chiefs.com on Red Wednesday, catering to fans across different locations with domestic and international shipping options.

Over the past nine years, the sale of Red Friday flags has contributed over $4.5 million to support RMHC-KC’s mission of providing assistance to families during challenging times of illness and need.

The Red Friday tradition honors a legacy initiated by Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt and the Chiefs Red Coaters, involving the sale of team-themed collectibles around the city to raise funds for local charities. Since its inception, Red Friday’s efforts, including sales of newspapers, magazines, and flags, have generated approximately $6 million to aid local charities, particularly those focused on helping youth in vulnerable situations.

More details regarding the Red Wednesday festivities and the NFL Kickoff celebration are expected to be disclosed at a later date, and updates will be posted on the Chiefs’ official website, www.chiefs.com.
