High School Basketball Local Sports

The Chillicothe Hornet basketball team claimed a pair of quarterfinal victories on Tuesday night in the Lawson Invitational Tournament, advancing to the semifinal round.

The top-seed Lady Hornets hammered Richmond 73-12, while the Chillicothe boys had a tougher tussle with Penney High School of Hamilton, but moved on with a 49-38 win in the “Battle of Hornets”.

In other quarterfinal results from Lawson, the host Lawson Lady Cards rolled past Gallatin 55-13, while the Gallatin boys handled Lawson by a final score of 67-47.

There are three consolation semifinal games on the docket for tonight (Wednesday night), with the Trenton Lady Bulldogs taking on Gallatin for the second time in eight nights, with time at 5 o’clock in a consolation semifinal in the LHS gymnasium.  In the other girls semifinal, at 7:30 from the Barker Center, West Platte’s Lady Jays battle Richmond.

Only one boys game will be played tonight, with the Penney Hornets and Lawson Cardinals dueling at 7 o’clock in the high school gym.  Due to COVID-19 issues with North Platte, Trenton’s consolation semifinal with the Panthers was deemed a forfeit, moving the Bulldog boys to the consolation final on Friday night at 7:30.

Four more quarterfinals were contested on Tuesday night at the South Harrison Tournament in Bethany, with the boys taking center stage.  The Princeton Tigers got back in the win column with a 78-29 win over the South Harrison JV.  The Northeast Nodaway Blue Jays downed Tri-County 56-43, snapping the Mustangs four-game winning streak.  South Harrison’s boys protected the home court with a 60-43 win over East Harrison, with North Harrison taking down Maysville to finish the night, 69-62.

Two girls consolation semifinals will be followed by two girls semifinals on Wednesday night in Bethany, with East Harrison and North Harrison playing at 4:30 and Northeast Nodaway tangling with Tri-County at 6 o’clock in the consolation games.  The championship semifinals will feature a “Mercer County flair”, with top-seed Mercer taking on Maysville at 9 o’clock, preceded by Princeton and South Harrison playing for the second time in five nights, this time with the Bulldogs having home court advantage, at 7:30.

The boys side of the Milan Tournament opened for business on Tuesday night, with a pair of competitive games.  Second-seeded Milan survived an upset bid from Brashear, winning 59-52, while Marceline clipped Putnam County by a score of 77-73.  The final girls quarterfinal of the tournament opened the night, with Brashear slipping past the Milan JV, 37-34.

Night #3 from Milan begins at 4:30 on Wednesday afternoon, with the top-seeded Green City boys taking on the Milan JV.  The following two games will be broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3, with the Grundy R-V Panthers taking on the Novinger Wildcats at 6:15 in a boys quarterfinal, followed by a girls semifinal at 8 o’clock, with Milan hosting the Marceline Lady Tigers.
