Chillicothe girls, Maryville boys take team titles at Joe Shy Relays

Chillicothe High School hosted the annual Joe Shy Track and Field Relays on Thursday afternoon at Jerry Litton Memorial Stadium, with the host Lady Hornets amassing an even 100 points to take the girls team title.  In the boys race, the Maryville Spoofhounds racked up 134 1/2 points, outdistancing the runner-up Chillicothe Hornets total of 104.  The Trenton Lady Bulldogs, with 43 points, finished in 8th place, while the Trenton boys picked up 40 points, good for 9th position.

Trenton highlights included sophomore Jadan Whitney finishing 2nd in the shot put to Chillicothe’s Walker Graves, and finishing 3rd in the discus toss.    Trenton girl’s track coach Chris Parks reports that the Lady Bulldogs got “strong performances from Whitley Richman in the high jump, Mason Hooyman in the pole vault, and from the 4 by 400 relay team of Tenna Roberts, Shayla Woodside, McKayla Blackburn, and Lexi Whitaker”.  However, the Trenton coaches did admit that neither “Bulldog team had a great day at the Joe Shy Relays”.

Starting in the girls sprint events, Richmond’s Sherri Doss won the 100 meter dash, while finishing second to Plattsburg’s Hanna Williams in the 200 meter dash.  The 200 win started a tremendous day for Williams, who added a victory in the 400 meter dash, with Trenton’s Shayla Woodside finishing eighth.  Chillicothe’s multi-sport standout Whitney Clampitt, with a time of 2:32.22, won the 800 meter run, while Marshall’s Elizabeth Pomerenke “doubled up” with wins in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs.  Penney High School freshman Nora Ford finished second in the 1600, with Cameron’s Nicole Johnson second in the 3200.

Jaime Albertson of Chillicothe had a superb day in the hurdles events, sweeping the girls 100 and 300 races (15.87 and 51.72 seconds).  In the 100, Chillicothe’s Kylee Larson was 3rd, with Trentno’s Richman in 7th place.  Larson of the Lady Hornets was runner-up in the 300 hurdles, with Richman of Trenton again in 7th.

The Lady Cards of Lawson were dominating in the relay races, taking the title in the 4 by 100 (Trenton 8th), 4 by 200 (Trenton 5th), and 4 by 400 races.  The Trenton 4 by 400 team (Roberts, Woodside, Blackburn, Whitaker) was second to Lawson, 3 3/4 seconds behind the Lady Cards.  Marshall took the 4 by 800 title, with runner-up Penney (Hannah Graham, Hailyn Park, Laney Park, Nora Ford) eight seconds behind.  The Trenton 4 by 800 team (Roberts, Cassidy Trump, Abbie Shuler, McKayla Blackburn) was sixth.

Chillicothe’s Clampitt jumped 5 feet, 2 inches to win the high jump, just two inches better than the 5 feet of Trenton’s Richman, who finishing second. Hailyn Park of Penney was sixth, tied with two other jumpers at 4′ 6″, including Chillictohe’s Lauren Gregory.  Emma Fonke of Clinton, at 9 feet, 6 inches, took the pole vault title, six inches ahead of the best effort of Trenton’s runner-up Mason Hooyman, who went nine feet event.  Chillicothe’s Molly Jones was third, with Trenton’s Cassidy Trump in a three-way tie for 4th place at 8 feet, in a group that included Chillicothe’s Kennedy Corzette.

Hanna Williams of Plattsburg returned to the top of the podium in the long jump, with a 17 foot, 8 1/2 inch effort.  Trenton’s Woodside was 8th and Chillicothe’s Clampitt 4th.  Nicole Johnson of Richmond won a duel with Clampitt in the triple jump, going 36 feet, 1 1/2 inches compared to the 35 foot, 5 1/2 inch effort by the Lady Hornet senior, who finished second.  Again, Trenton’s Shayla Woodside was 8th.

In the girls throwing events, Sydney Stigall of Richmond High School won the shot put, with Lathrop’s Deidra Sellers claiming the discus title. Carrollton’s Kayla Enciso, at 101 feet, 3 inches, took the javelin crown.

In boys results, Benton’s Cooper Burton took the 100 meter dash (10.93 seconds), with Maryville’s Reece Bickford (22.59) winning the 200.  Chillicothe’s Brett Shaffer had a strong day, including runner-up in the 200 race.  Maryville’s Joshua Sanders ran for Spoofhound gold in the 400 and 800 meter dashes (52.28 and 2:04.98 seconds).  The ‘Hounds continued to dominate in the distance runs, with Caleb Feuerbacher taking the 1600 (4:40.53) and 3200 (10:09.49) crowns.  Trenton’s Zane Rottman, with a time of 4:59.03, was sixth in the 1600 meter run, with the Bulldogs Daniel Rodriguez (11:09.89) sixth in the 3200.

Chillicothe’s Shaffer swept the hurdles events, winning in the 110 meter (15.14) and 300 meter (40.92) races.  Matthew Sibbit of Trenton was 8th in the 110 and 300 events.

With the exception of the 4 by 800 relay, which was won by the Penney Hornets (Crayton Crawford, Jaran Richman, Andrew Ernat, Derek Dixon / 8:36.17), the relay races were won by Midland Empire Conference schools.  The Trenton Bulldogs were 5th in the 4 by 800 race, while the Benton Cardinals took the title in the 4 by 100.  LeBlond won the 4 by 200 relay, with Trenton 6th.  Chillicothe’s four-some of Jacob Anderson, Layne Worman, Peyton Forck, and Brett Shaffer won the 4 by 400 title, in a time of 3:34.82.  

In field events, Trey Miller of Clinton won the high jump, with Chillicothe’s Forck and Anderson finishing 3rd and 4th, and Trenton’s Dylan Harris in a 7th place tie.  Joseph Zinkand of Cameron won the pole vault at 12 feet, followed by Chillicothe’s Jack Willard.  Trenton’s Harris was tied for 5th with Maryville’s Spencer Morrison.  

Brock Swindler of Penney won the long jump, at 21 feet, 8 inches.  Trenton’s Austin Burkeybile (19′ 10″) was fifth.  An all-KCI Conference duel in the triple jump was won by Lathrop’s Brock Lewis, with a 43 foot, 7 1/2 inch effort besting Penney’s Swindler, at 43 feet, 6 inches.  

Chillicothe’s Walker Graves took the shot put title, with a throw of 52 feet, 2 1/2 inches besting runner-up Jadan Whitney (Trenton), who threw 50 feet, 5 inches.  Elijah Green of Maryville took the discus title (150′ 5″), with Graves second (143 feet), and Whitney third (139′ 2″).  Owen Dobbins of Carrollton won the javelin throw.  Chillicothe had Brad Mosier 4th and Walker Graves 6th, while Trenton’s Cole Schilling was 8th.
