Furious THS rally falls short in wild loss to Pattonsburg

Through 3 1/2 innings of Monday’s Grand River Conference crossover baseball game at Burleigh Grimes Field, the Pattonsburg Panthers looked to be well on their way to a victory, likely by a shortened run-rule game.  However, by the time the game had ended, the Panthers were relieved to have held on to a key road win.

In a game that saw Pattonsburg score the first 14 runs of the contest, the Panthers won over the host Trenton Bulldogs 14-12, with Trenton increasing the nerves of the PHS team with five runs in the fifth inning, and three more in both the 6th and 7th innings, after the Bulldogs had hopped on the board with a single tally in the bottom of the 4th inning.

Both teams committed eight errors in a sloppily played game, with the Panthers picking up six hits, while Trenton had nine hits.  Pattonsburg’s pitching staff was more effective with adding up strikeouts compared to Trenton, with the Panthers staff picking up 13 punchouts to Trenton’s four.

The Panthers leadoff hitter, Coin, had five RBI’s, with the right fielder, Clark, given free walks and driving in three runs.  The cleanup hitter, Weller, scored three runs with three hits.

Trenton’s offensive punch included Mason Rongey with three RBI’s and a pair of hits, Elijah Miller with three runs scored, Gabe Novak scoring twice, and Chris Taylor scoring three runs.  Brayden Wiggins had two hits and a pair of RBI’s.

Both teams sent three pitchers to the mound.  Weller started for Pattonsburg and threw an effective two innings, striking out five batters in shutout fashion.  Gabe Novak, Coleman Griffin, and Aidan Weyer “toed the slab” for the host Bulldogs.
