Grundy County boys move into HDC Tournament consolation final, beating Tri-County

The Grundy R-5 boys had one of their best offensive performances of the season on Monday night, as Wayne Baxter had 24 points, Bryson Gann 23, and Jonathan Stimpson 20, in a 74-48 win over the Tri-County Mustangs in the consolation semifinals of the HDC Conference Tournament.

Tri-County’s Skyler Blackburn led all scorers with 33 points.  The Panthers win moves Grundy into a meeting with Gilman City in Thursday night’s consolation championship game at 6:30 (at Winston High School).  The Hawks rolled to a 74-45 victory against Newtown-Harris on Monday night, as Cornelius Peery had 19 points, Kaleb Bjornlie 16, Skylar Reynolds 14, Mitch Sievering 10, and Gage Sperry 10 points.  For the Tigers, Josh Allen had 12, and Ben Henry 10 points.

In Monday night’s girls consolation semifinals, the Newtown-Harris Lady Tigers lost to East Harrison 53-31, as Lauryn Waddle had 21 and Natayla Selby 11 for the Lady Bobcats, while Gabrielle Nielson had 20 for NHHS.  East Harrison will play Winston in the girls consolation final, Thursday afternoon at 4:30, after the Lady Redbirds beat Tri-County on Monday night, 46-20.  Sophie Pliley had 22 and Josie McFee 16 for WHS.

The HDC Conference Tournament started on Saturday with eight quarterfinal games at Winston High School.  The scores were:

In the Mercer-Gilman City boy’s game, Hawks junior Cornelius Perry scored his 1,000th career point during the first quarter.  Cornelius is the son of Rocky and Caroline Peery of Gilman City.
