Grundy Panthers sweep Hale, head to HDC Tournament with strong momentum

The Grundy R-5 basketball teams backed up Tuesday’s HDC Conference sweep of the Gilman City Hawks with two more victories on Thursday night, defeating the Hale Cardinals at the gymnasium in Galt.

The Lady Panthers won the opener last night, 66-52, behind a seven 3-point shot, 26 point night from Morgan Axtell.  Axtell added five assists and four steals in the victory.  Anna Milazzo had 13 points and led the Lady Panthers with nine rebounds, while Jandie Peterson had 12 points, and Brianna Carpio nine.

The Grundy boys had a closer affair with Hale, but found the win column by a final score of 59-56.  Caden Gann led the Panthers with 14 points, while Jonathan Stimpson had 12 points and Wayne Baxter 11.

The Lady Panthers victory improves the Grundy girls overall record to 16-4, while the Grundy boys continue pushing towards the .500 mark, with a two-game winning streak surging Steve Wells’ team to 8-12.

The Tina-Avalon girls and boys split a CLAA doubleheader with Norborne on Thursday night, with a spirited effort by the Lady Dragons coming up just short, as the #4 ranked (Class 1 MBCA) Lady Pirates claimed a 44-39 road win.  Tina-Avalon, on a buzzer-beating three-ball by Khloey Forst, was tied after one quarter at 13-13, and led at the half, 24-20.  Norborne was led by Kennadie Crowe with 14 points, while Kayla Dooley had 12, and Madison Brown 11.  Tina-Avalon’s girls, now 10-9 overall and 4-4 in CLAA play, had 16 points from freshman Samantha Rounkles, while Hannah Colliver had 12.

The Tina-Avalon boys won the nightcap against Norborne, defeating the Pirates 54-42.
