Lady Bulldogs win Maysville Tournament title

High School Softball Local Sports

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs had one of their best road trips of the season on Saturday, heading to Maysville, and returning home with three wins, including a championship game triumph over GRC rival and host Maysville, to win the 2021 Maysville Tournament.

THS, in improving to 5-8 on the season, beat Plattsburg 10-3, DeKalb 6-4, and Maysville 6-4.  Making the win over the Wolverines particularly gratifying for the Bulldogs was an 8-4 loss just days earlier to the same team at Trenton High School, and the ability to slow Maysville’s momentum, after MHS had won two pool play games by a combined score of 22-0 (13-0 vs. Plattsburg and 9-0 vs. DeKalb).

In the championship game against Maysville, Emma Roberts worked out a pair of walks and seven hits allowed to grab the victory, with Avery Clark earning the save, allowing two hits and a run.  Gracyn Rongey had a pair of hits and an RBI for Trenton, with Chandler Lynch scoring twice, and Mirena King, Jena Harris, and Morgan King all driving in runs.

In the 10-3 triumph over Plattsburg, Rongey had a pair of hits in three at-bats, scoring twice with an RBI.  Morgan King and Shay Westerhof both had two runs, with Westerhof scoring twice.  Madi Moore had two RBI’s, with Clark earning the win from the circle, allowing four hits and only three runs.

In the 6-4 win over DeKalb, the Lady Bulldogs avenged an earlier loss at the Cameron Tournament, with Lynch scoring twice, and Moore driving in three runs.  Roberts earned the victory, with Clark getting the save.

On Monday night, Trenton’s road swing continued with a trek to Hamilton to play the rival Penney Lady Hornets on Hot Country Z 101.7.

Penney scored twice in the bottom of the 7th inning against Avery Clark to take the 4-3 victory.  Starting pitcher Amelia Pingleton drove in Aniston Houghton with the game-winning run on an RBI single.  A safety squeeze bunt by Houghton had scored Jade Gray with the tying run.

Trenton took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 4th inning, with Chandler Lynch leading off with a triple, followed by a successful safety squeeze by Mirena King.  Penney began to turn opportunities into runs against starting pitcher Emma Roberts in the late innings, drawing within 2-1 in the 5th inning, as a stolen base by Izzy Baker, combined with a throwing error by the Bulldogs, slicing the lead in half.  Penney tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, with Rayne Gray socring on a two-out single by Hannah Nixdorf.

Trenton briefly took the lead back in the top of the 7th inning, with a Madi Moore two-out single sending home Gracyn Rongey with the go-ahead run.  THS will return to Grand River Conference play on Tuesday night, hosting the GRC East-leading South Harrison Lady Bulldogs at 5:30, with coverage on KTTN FM 92.3.
