Lady Hornets take early season rivalry win at Trenton, 7-2

The Chillicothe Lady Hornets continued their strong start to the tennis season, traveling to Trenton on Monday afternoon and downing the Lady Bulldogs by a final tally of 7-2.

The visitors got momentum rolling in singles, with Hunter Keithley (#1) and Delaney May (#4) sweeping their way to 8-love triumphs.  At #2 singles, Macy Cavanah took an 8-1 win, with Hannah Zimmerman winning at #3 singles, 8-4, and Leah Laurenco, at #6 singles, emerging with a hard-fought 8-6 win.  For Trenton, Mallory Sole took a win at #5 singles, 8-4.

In doubles, Keithley and Zimmerman combined for an 8-5 win for the Hornets, with Sisson and Laurenco grabbing an 8-5 final.  At #2 doubles, Trenton’s Gwyneth Foster and Mallory Sole won by an 8-2 final.

The two rivals split six JV matches with one another, as Trenton’s Amanda Parrack and Leslie Cotiango won 6-2, Harley Hall and Kaylor Farris 6-1, while Jessika Kennedy combined with Chloie Hall for a 6-4 win.  For Chillicothe, Cami Carpenter won in singles 6-love, with Carpenter combining with Olivia Anderson for a 6-4 win, while Julietta Keller and Hailey Fahling took a 6-2 victory.

On Tuesday, Trenton rebounded with a 6-3 home court win over visiting Bishop LeBlond.  For the Lady Bulldogs, it was a 3-3 split in singles play, with Foster grabbing an 8-2 win, while Sole continued her solid play with an 8-5 victory, followed by Alaina Overton grabbing a dominant 8-1 final.

Trenton’s strength came from doubles, as Lexi Gott and Kendall Crowley rolled to an 8-2 triumph, Foster and Sole won 8-6, while Morgan Dolan and Overton took an 8-1 final score.

Head Coach Tammy Ockenfels summed up Tuesday by saying, “We won, but are still showing room for improvement.  We started off strong winning all of the doubles matches, but need to carry that momentum into singles!”

Trenton’s tennis team travels to Cameron to play the Lady Dragons on Thursday afternoon, followed by the Benton Tournament in St. Joseph on Friday.
