It has long been known that native Texan Patrick Mahomes, in the midst of becoming a legendary quarterback with the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs, has never waned from his love for the Whataburger burger chain, best known as a Texas fast food staple.

Soon after Mahomes arrival at Arrowhead Stadium, the chain announced an expansion, with plans to open corporate facilities in the Kansas City suburbs of Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, Independence, and Overland Park.

Now, with Mahomes involvement moving to status as a “new investor”, Whataburger, through franchise group KMO Burger, has announced plans to open 30 more stores, ranging from Wichita, Kansas and through the Kansas City metro area, including a location in St. Joseph, the Chiefs training camp home.

In a news release, Mahomes said of the expansion, “I love Kansas City and I love Whataburger.  I’m excited to help bring a gift from my first home to my second home!”

Announced locations for Whataburger stores in the Kansas City area, at this point, are both for openings in the fall months or late in the 2022 calendar year, with one location at Highway 152 and North Booth Avenue, and the other at 400 Northwest Barry Road.

While the stores themselves remain over a year away from completion, the corporate offices for KMO Burger could be finished an opened by the end of 2021.

Mahomes, besides being the quarterback of Kansas City’s football team, has been philanthropic early in his Chiefs tenure, becoming part-owner of the Kansas City Royals and Sporting Kansas City.  His fiancee, Brittany Matthews, is part-owner of Kansas City’s women’s professional soccer team, Kansas City NWSL.
