Milan Wildcats split Wednesday night contests at Novinger Tournament

The Milan Lady Wildcats came into Wednesday night hopeful of an upset win over Scotland County, but struggled to score while the Lady Tigers filled the net consistently.  By the time four quarters had elapsed, Milan’s girls were left licking their wounds, in a 73-14 Scotland County win that sends the Memphis team into the Novinger Tournament title game, Saturday at 3:20 PM against Green City.

Abi Feeney had 18 points scored for Scotland County, while Chelsea Wood scored 16, Maddie Brassfield 13, and Calesse Bair, 11.  Half of Milan’s 14 points were tallied by senior guard Kenna Michael, who scored seven in defeat.

The Lady ‘Cats, now 2-1 to start the hoops season, will play the LaPlata Lady Bulldogs in the Novinger Tournament’s third place game, Friday night at 8:10 on KTTN FM 92.3.  LaPlata, in girls semifinal action on Thursday night, fell to Green City 48-39.  Friday night’s girls action starts with a consolation final at 5:30, with Atlanta battling Brashear.

With basketball season underway at Milan High School, Sports Director Tom Johnson spoke with Lady ‘Cats Head Coach Nathan Simler, entering his second season at the helm of the girls basketball program.  The show will air at 3:30 Friday afternoon on KTTN FM 92.3:

The Lady ‘Cats, after Friday’s contest, will return home for a rematch with Scotland County, Tuesday night at 6 o’clock on Hot Country Z 101.7 (with audio streaming at www.KTTNSports.com).

Things went better for the Milan boys on Wednesday night, as the Wildcats rebounded from Monday night’s 78-69 loss at Green City with a resounding 60-32 triumph over the Atlanta Hornets.  The win pushes Andrea Dabney’s team to 2-1 on the season, and sends Milan into the consolation final at Novinger, Friday night at 6:50 against the Brashear Tigers, on KTTN FM 92.3.  Brashear, playing on Thursday night, beat Newtown-Harris 53-40, ending the Tigers week at Novinger with a record of 0-2.

The Scotland County boys are into the Novinger title game, after giving the Wildcats their second loss of the season, 76-69 on Thursday night.  On Saturday at 4:40, the Tigers challenge #1 seed LaPlata for the title trophy at Novinger High School.
