Polo Panthers win twice, move to GIT consolation finals

The Polo High School basketball teams picked up consolation round victories on Wednesday night, moving into Friday night’s consolation finals in the Gallatin Invitational Tournament.

The Lady Panthers, playing in the third game of the session, beat Gilman City 58-47, as Jenni Farmer scored 24 points and Shelby Copeland 11 for PHS.  Gilman City was paced by 29 points from senior guard Hailey Burrows.  Haize Wilson added 11 to the Ladyhawks cause.

The Winston Lady Redbirds, in Wednesday night’s first contest at GHS, beat Maysville 28-27.  Sophie Pliley of Winston was the only player for either side in double figures, netting 14 points.

The Polo girls will duel with Winston in a 7 o’clock consolation final on Friday night in Gallatin, with Gilman City and Maysville dropping into the seventh place game, Friday at 4:30 PM.

The Polo boys were able to rebound from Tuesday night’s quarterfinal loss to Trenton, beating the Hardin-Central Bulldogs on Wednesday, 54-51.  That result advances the Panthers in an 8:15 consolation final on Friday night against Maysville, as the Wolverines moved on with a 68-46 win over Gilman City.  Austin Podbevsek led MHS with 27 points as Austin Shirk added 17.  For the Hawks, Mitchell Sievering had 15 points and Cornelius Peery 12.

The Gilman City boys, on Friday night at 5:45, will play the Hardin-Central Bulldogs in the seventh place game at Gallatin High School.
