Munday’s 17 point night sends Lady Panthers to Milan semifinals

Matana Munday scored 17 points to pace a strong three-pronged attack on Monday night, leading the Grundy County Lady Panthers to a 51-31 triumph over Novinger in the quarterfinal round of the Milan Invitational Tournament.

Jandie Peterson added 16 points and Morgan Axtell 12 for Grundy R-5, moving their team to a 6:30 semifinal on Wednesday night with the #1 seeded Green City Lady Gophers.  Novinger will move into Friday night’s consolation final at 5 o’clock.

Long-time rivals Novinger and Green City took boys quarterfinal wins at Monday night at Milan’s “Den”, with the Gophers rolling past Grundy R-5 78-28, while the Wildcats routed Newtown-Harris 72-33.  Novinger and Green City, the #2 and #3 seeds in the Milan boys tournament, will meet in a semifinal on Wednesday night at 8 o’clock, while Grundy R-5 and Newtown-Harris drop into an all-HDC consolation semifinal, Wednesday afternoon at 5 o’clock.

The second night of action from the Milan Tournament starts at 5 o’clock tonight (Tuesday night) from MHS, as the Linn County Lady Mustangs, seeded third, take on the Brashear Lady Tigers.  At 6:30, the fourth-seeded Linn County Mustangs and fifth-seeded Brashear Tigers duel for a spot opposite #1 seed Milan in Thursday night’s (6:30) semifinals, while in tonight’s final game, the #2 seeded Milan Lady Wildcats, coming off a tough one-point loss to Marceline on Friday night, look to rebound against #7 seed Newtown-Harris at 8 o’clock.
