Penney High School’s Sam Cornelius shot 39 on the front nine and 39 on the back nine on Thursday, shooting a 78, 11 better than the runner-up score of 89 from Moberly’s Anna Lewis in the annual Chillicothe Golf Tournament at the Green Hills Course in Chillicothe.

Maryville won the team title with a score of 390, with Chillicothe second by just one stroke over Trenton, as the Lady Hornets shot 413 and Trenton 414.  Kirksville was fourth at 423, and Bishop LeBlond fifth at 434.

Other teams at the tournament came from Moberly, Lawson, Richmond, Plattsburg, Cameron, Marceline, and Southwest Livingston.

Despite having only two players, Hamilton did well, as Addison Cornett scored a 99 to go with the 78 of Cornelius.

Trenton’s top score of 95, turned in by Kaitlyn Mounce, was good for sixth place.  Other scores for THS were Werthen Gass at 102, Lana Raymo 106, Hannah Kennebeck 111, and Jordain Oshel 115.

All five of Chillicothe’s scores were in triple digits, but bunched just close enough to push the Lady Hornets over Trenton by that one stroke for the runner-up spot.  For the host Lady Hornets, Hannah Sherrow shot 100, Riley Brobst 101, Maddie Lamp and Hannah Haakonstad both 106, and Lexi Hargrave 112.

Lawson’s best score was a 106 by Lexi Kennedy.  Micaila Gann shot 93 and Peyton Thomas 96 for LeBlond, while Kaleigh Neal had Southwest’s best round of 123.
