Perez sets new season home run mark, Royals down New York

Local Sports MLB

Salvador Perez smashed two home runs, one in the bottom of the first inning to give the Royals an early lead, and one that served as the start of a mid-game momentum surge, as Kansas City beat the New York Yankees by a score of 8-4 on Tuesday night.

Perez hammered his first inning homer 418 feet, giving the Royals a 2-0 lead.  A sixth inning shot tied the game at 4, with the Royals taking the advantage later in the sixth, as Hunter Dozier drove in Emmanuel Rivera with a double.  Perez now has 29 home runs this season, breaking his personal record of 27 set twice before in the late 2010’s.

In extending their lead in the late innings, Michael A. Taylor scored in the 7th on a throwing error by relief pitcher Stephen Ridings.  Hanser Alberto had a sacrifice fly in the 8th.  Josh Staumont got the victory to improve to 2-2, retiring all four batters he faced.

Kyle Higashioka hit a two-run homer for New York, still trying to chase down the Rays and Red Sox in the AL East and Boston and Oakland for the available wild-card spots for the postseason.
