Shooting slump costs Bulldogs in road loss at Marceline

High School Basketball Local Sports

The Trenton Bulldogs, aiming to win their third game in a row, opened play on Tuesday night at Marceline battling the Tigers back and forth to a 22-22 tie after one quarter.  However, the productivity slipped over the last three quarters, as the Tigers won their season opener 64-57 in action broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3.

Trenton’s first-half offense was led with a first-quarter surge by Brycin Loyd and a second-quarter explosion by Chase Otto, with Loyd scoring 15 of his 17 of his 22 points in the opening quarter, while Otto, who finished with 22 points, had 12 of those in a six-bucket barrage in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs, trailing 37-36 at halftime, struggled with shooting percentage after the break, scoring just 12 points in the third quarter and nine in the fourth.  A late third-quarter run gave the host Tigers breathing room going into the final stanza, with a 55-48 advantage.

Marceline, 1-0 to start the season, was paced by Will Heller with 18 points, with Zach Neimeier scoring 17 and Christopher Dixon 15 points.

Trenton Coach Corbin Coe :

The Bulldogs, having lost for a first time since a setback early last week to Winston, take a 2-2 mark into Chillicothe on Friday night to take on the rival Hornets (7:30 PM / KTTN FM 92.3), while Marceline is at Green City for a 7:30 tip with the Gophers in non-conference action.

The Marceline girls, flustered by a tough scrambling Trenton defense, struggled to find points in the Lady Tigers season opener, with THS, on the strength of a late third-quarter burst, building a double-digit lead, and hanging on for a 35-30 road win.

Trenton left the door very much open in the fourth quarter for a Marceline comeback, hitting only 1 of 10 free throws, but more often than that, the young Tigers came up empty with late-game possessions.

Freshman forward Madi Moore led 2-2 Trenton with 12 points, with many of the six baskets, all from close to the rim, set up on the drive and pass ability of junior guard Chandler Lynch, who finished with seven points on the night.  Teya Cooksey hit a pair of second-quarter three point shots in a six point night, with Mallory Sole adding six.

Marceline had 11 points from Kaileen Gibson, with Ramzee Bruner and Kennedy Edgar each contributing five.  The win for the Lady Bulldogs breaks a two-game losing streak, going into Friday night’s 6 o’clock contest at Chillicothe.

Victorious coach Kameron Cool :

The Marceline girls and boys will open Lewis and Clark Conference play at Paris on Tuesday, December 15th, with the Trenton girls and boys, on the same night, traveling to Princeton.
