Volleyball’s “Final Four” set as unbeaten Lawson rolls to SEMO

Local Sports Volleyball

The unbeaten Lawson Lady Cardinals took seven sets of action on Saturday, winning six of them, to advance to the Class 2 “Show-Me Showdown” in high school volleyball this weekend in Cape Girardeau.

Lawson ended the season of the Carrollton Lady Trojans, winning on Saturday afternoon 25-9, 25-9, 25-12, to advance to play KCI Conference rival West Platte, a sectional winner over Adrian, in the state quarterfinals.  Playing on West Platte’s home floor in Weston, Lawson rolled on with a 25-21, 25-18, 24-26, 25-15 victory.

The win sends Lawson into a Class 2 state semifinal, with a perfect mark of 25-0, against 6-7 Christian on Friday night at 7 o’clock from the Show-Me Center at Southeast Missouri State University.  On the top half of the Class 2 bracket, Valle Catholic (29-5-2) will play Miller (31-2), also Friday night at 7 o’clock.

The Class 2 third place match is 2 o’clock, and the state championship match at 4:30, both on Saturday.

The closest that northern Missouri has for a ‘local’ representative in the Class 1 event is Cass-Midway, a small district approximately 45 minutes south of Kansas City.  The Vikings, with a mark of 22-1, will take on 24-10-2 Lesterville on Friday afternoon at 4:30, with 33-1-2 Advance battling 11-13-3 New Haven at the same time.  The Class 1 final matches will be Saturday morning, with third place at 9 o’clock, and the state title match at 11:30.

Missouri’s ‘big schools’ will play semifinal round action today (Thursday, November 5th) from the SEMO campus.  For the first time since 2009, the Maryville Spoofhounds have reached the Final Four, with the 19-2 ‘Hounds taking on 24-6-3 Hermann at 9 o’clock this morning, opposite the other Class 3 semifinal, with 26-5-3 Park Hills Central challenging 33-2-1 Springfield Catholic.

In Class 4, the area representative is Platte County High School, with the Lady Pirates hauling a 27-6-2 record into a semifinal with 11-4 Parkway West at 1:30 on Thursday afternoon, with 11-3 Nerinx Hall battling 29-3-1 Willard on the top half of the bracket.

In Class 5, a powerhouse from the Kansas City metro has made its way to southeast Missouri, as 22-0 Liberty North will take on 21-3-1 St. Dominic on Thursday night at 6 o’clock, opposite the semifinal between 29-4-2 St. Francis Borgia and 32-3 Nixa.

Trenton High School, for the first time in the 25-year history of its volleyball program, reached a district final, falling in three sets at Carrollton on Thursday, October 29th.  Trenton was well represented on the all-district team, with Evy McCullough, Ava Simpson, and Kenzie Yuille earning first-team status, while Lilly Berti and Olivia Roberts were named all-district second team.
