The Winston boys scored 147 points to take another HDC Conference boys team championship, joined by the North Harrison girls, with 114 points, in Wednesday’s track and field meet held at South Harrison High School in Bethany.
Following the Redbirds 147 points were 118 points from North Harrison, and 112 points from third place Newtown-Harris. The Tri-County Lady Mustangs earned a second place finish with 85 points, two points ahead of the 83 points scored by the Grundy R-5 Lady Panthers. The Grundy R-5 boys finished in sixth place with 28 points, with the Tri-County boys scoring 11 points. The Mercer boys finished 9th place with only 3 points on the day, while the Mercer Lady Cardinals, with 32 points, finished 7th out of 8 teams.
In field events, Ben Busick of Newtown-Harris had an exemplary day, winning the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches) and long jump (18 feet, 5.5 inches) titles. Gilman City High School senior Hailey Burrows took three victories, in the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches), 200 meter dash (29.33 seconds), and 400 meter dash (1 minute, 10.24 seconds). Winston’s boys earned 30 points, in three victories, from Austin Rhoades, in the 800 meter run (2 minutes, 21.43 seconds), 1600 meter run (5 minutes, 25.54 seconds), and 3200 meter run (11 minutes, 50.36 seconds). Saxton Pliley added two wins to the Redbirds total, with victories in the javelin toss (127 feet, 9 inches), and 300 meter hurdles (49.49 seconds). The other individual victories for the team champions from WHS came from Logan Caldwell, with a discus toss best of 106 feet, 3 inches, and Ross Nelson, winner of the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 20.44 seconds.
Blake Foster joined Ben Busick as Newtown-Harris champions in field events, with Foster taking the shot put title, with a throw of 38 feet, 10.5 inches. In the individual sprints, winning the 100 meter dash was East Harrison’s Dallas Bodrov (11.82 seconds), with North Harrison’s J.D. Baker taking the 200 (25.24 seconds), and Gilman City’s Cornelius Peery the 400 (59.82 seconds).
The boys relays were split by East Harrison (4 by 100 / 50.98 seconds and 4 by 200 / 1 minute, 45.91 seconds), North Harrison (4 by 400 / 4 minutes, 8.58 seconds and 4 by 800 / 9 minutes, 59.5 seconds).
The North Harrison Lady Shamrocks individual championships came from Payton Craig in the triple jump (29 feet, 7 inches) and javelin (95 feet, 8 inches), Brandy Rivet in the 100 meter dash (14.01 seconds), and Mardee Sadowsky in the 800 meters (2 minutes, 46.87 seconds) and 3200 meters (14 minutes, 16.24 seconds).
Matana Munday took home two HDC Conference field event titles for Grundy R-5, with the Lady Panther senior winning the discus (109 feet, 1.5 inches) and shot put (35 feet, 1 inch). Jandie Peterson won the Lady Panthers other title, also in a field event, with a long jump best of 13 feet, 7.5 inches.
Winston High School’s Sophie Pliley took the 1600 meter race (6 minutes, 22.64 seconds), with East Harrison’s Natayla Selby winning the 100 hurdles (18.8 seconds) and Jaden Almond of Tri-County the 300 hurdles, with a time of 56 seconds.
The girls relays were won by the East Harrison Lady Bobcats (4 by 100 / 58.66 seconds and 4 by 200 / 2 minutes, 5.13 seconds), Grundy R-5 Lady Panthesr (4 by 400 / 4 minutes, 54.14 seconds), and the Tri-County Lady Mustangs (4 by 800 / 15 minutes).
