Wolves, in high-scoring battle, even season-series with NCMC, 114-106

The North Central Missouri College men ran into a hot-shooting Metropolitan-Penn Valley squad on Saturday afternoon, falling 114-106 in Region XVI action from Kansas City, broadcast locally on Hot Country Z 101.7.

Matthew Austin, a MCC sophomore from Central High School in St. Joseph, led the Wolves with 33 points, hitting five three-pointers in the first seven minutes of the game to put North Central in the trailing position for the rest of the afternoon.  Travis Carson had 22 points, Alex Herndon 19, and Isaiah Burton 13 for MCC, now 9-12 overall and 1-2 in Region XVI play.

The Pirates, falling to 11-11 overall and 1-2 in Region XVI play, trailed 66-49 at the half, but with a furious comeback led by sophomore forward Cameron Lockett, rallied to within as close as one point in the second half, only to be pushed back by the Wolves consistently strong outside shooting.  Lockett had a season-high 33 point effort for NCMC, with Kansas City native Quinan Rieves scoring 24, Soloman Thomas 17, Marty Jackson 11, and Yacento Scott 10.

In Saturday’s opener, Metropolitan’s women outscored North Central Missouri College, winning 91-65.  The win, improving the Wolves to 11-9 overall and 2-1 in Region XVI play, was led by Amanda Hohnstein’s 22 points.  Kassidy Snowden had 16, Maiya Randle 14, Tya Bell 14, and Octavia Lowery 12 points for MCC.

The Lady Pirates, in falling to 6-15 overall, and 0-3 in Region XVI action, had 12 points from Megan Ernzen.  Maddie Book contributed 11 and Hailey Burrows 10 points.
