First inning explosion sends Trenton to decisive GRC victory

High School Softball

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs jumped on GRC rival South Harrison early on Tuesday night, scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruising to a 14-0, five inning victory, moving to 6-4 on the season, and 4-1 in conference play.  South Harrison, mired in a seven-game losing skid is 1-7 overall, and 1-3 in GRC competition.

Highlights in Trenton’s first inning explosion, with 15 batters coming to the plate, included a two-run homer by Lexi Whitaker, and, in her second at-bat of the frame, a two-run blast off the bat of Maci Moore.  Chloe Harris, as part of a 3-for-3 night, scored a run and had an RBI single.

The beneficiary of Trenton’s offense was senior McKayla Blackburn, who earned the win with five innings of two-hit shutout softball, walking a batter, hitting a batter, and striking out seven.

South Harrison had a game-opening triple to the center field wall by Kooper Jennings, but she was left stranded with a pair of pop-outs combined with a strikeout.  Jillian Hurt had a two-out single in the third inning, when South Harrison left two runners on base.

Trenton plays at Polo on Thursday night, with South Harrison hosting Milan.  The Trenton JV beat South Harrison in a high-scoring affair 13-10.
