GRC champion South Harrison, Trenton junior Weldon among those advancing to Class 1 state golf

The South Harrison Lady Bulldogs, with a team score of 400, finished runner-up to Northeast of Cairo’s 399, in Thursday’s Class 1 District 3 girls golf tournament at the Heritage Hills Course in Moberly.

South Harrison, the 2023 Grand River Conference champion, boasted the top player on the course, with Abby Owens shooting a 14-over par round of 84.  Morgan Crist of Highland was second at 90.  Other sub-100 scores turned in were by Macie Herman of Northeast and Hanna Taylor of Canton, tying for 3rd place at 92.  Putnam County’s Abbie Koenen shot 95 for 5th place.

Gallatin’s top score was a 96 from Courtney Crose, good for 6th place.  South Harrison’s Chloe Hodge shot 102 for 10th place.  Courtesy of their top 2 team finishes, Cairo and South Harrison will send their entire team to battle for the Class 1 state title in Sedalia on Monday, October 16th and Tuesday, October 17th.

The “cut line” for those able to advance to state turned out to be 109.  There were four players shooting that 39-over par round of 109, including Trenton High School junior Reese Weldon, joined at that mark by Ella Sportsman of Marceline, Sierra Schmitz of Canton, and Madi Lumsden of Brookfield.

Other area players advancing to state are Gallatin’s Hannah Critten with a round of 108, and Brookfield’s Maggie Bennett at 107.

South Harrison’s state qualifying team is made up of Abby Owens, Chloe Hodge, Ashlee Cannon, Tenley Weller, and Paige Beaty.  Cannon and Weller both shot 107 and Beaty 111 for the Lady Bulldogs in Moberly.

Scores from area golfers finishing  outside of state qualification from Class 1, District 3 were North Harrison’s Lani Briggs and Jaci Davis both at 112, Kinsley Otto of Trenton at 112, LeAryah Leeper of Gallatin 114, Hailee Hein of Princeton 116, Sarah Wright of Marceline 118, Tayla Turner of Putnam County 120, Riley Rowe of Marceline 121, Reagan Smith of Putnam County 123, Brookfield’s Kierstyn Sutch at 123 and Riley Howell at 125, Putnam County’s Emma Whitlock at 125, Abbye Johnson of Trenton at 126, Brookfield’s Meghan Edwards at 132, Seanacie Ireland of Trenton and Gracie Mitchell of Princeton at 135, Ali Cox of Trenton at 136, Kassadi Alderson of Princeton, in addition to Jersey Rowe and Nora Vandelocecht both of Marceline all at 137, Samantha Blanchard of Putnam County and Jayde Curtis-Mazur of Gallatin at 138, and Katie Lynch of Gallatin at 141.

In the Class 1, District 4 competition, East Atchison won the team title with a round of 398, followed by runner-up East Buchanan’s 407.  Jamie Barnett of East Atchison won the individual championship with an 11-over par score of 82.  Those advancing to state, below the cut line of 116, from the immediate area, were Bridgette Hightshoe of Worth County (95 for 2nd place), Clare Staley of King City (95 for 2nd place), Plattsburg’s Addison Boyd (104), Plattsburg’s Ada Gollnick (108), Worth County’s Eva Engel (113), Maysville’s Sydney Popplewell (116) and Penney’s Izzy Potts (116).

Stover (447) and Sparta (457) advanced as the top two finishing teams in Class 1, District 1, with scores not yet available for Class 1, District 2, set to be played on Monday, October 9th in Columbia.

Class 2, District 4 was contested on Thursday at the Hidden Valley Golf Club in Lawson, with St. Michael’s claiming the team title at 322, followed by Maryville’s 327.

Cameron’s Allie Cass, with a round of 90, finished in a 12th place tie to move onto the state tournament, joined by Dragon teammate Jaylee Cruickshank at 97.
