Bulldogs stung by Chillicothe in Friday night rivalry games at CHS

High School Basketball

The Chillicothe Hornets got the better of the Trenton Bulldogs in both ends of a girls-boys varsity basketball doubleheader from Chillicothe High School, broadcast on Friday night by KGOZ-TV.

In a battle of state-ranked girls teams, Trenton’s youth struggled against Chillicothe’s depth and experience, with the Lady Hornets improving to 5-0 with a 58-32 victory.  Fort Hays State bound senior Whitney Clampitt had a game-high 20 points to lead CHS, with Hannah Jones adding 12, Mikah Clark eight, and Katelyn Parkey eight points.

Trenton, in much the same story as last year’s district championship loss to the Hornets, struggled to score against a rugged, fast, and intense defensive squad from the Midland Empire Conference  After falling behind 15-3 at the end of eight minutes, Trenton found a little bit of offensive rhythm, but it was too late to catch the Hornets, as Ainsley Tolson scored 12 points, matched by Whitley Richman’s 12 points for THS.

The loss is the first of the season for Trenton, now 5-1 on the campaign.  The Lady Bulldogs had entered the Class 3 rankings last week, moving into a tenth-place tie with Principia.  The Lady Bulldogs begin a busy three game week tonight (Monday night) hosting Carrollton at 6 o’clock on KGOZ-TV. Trenton, on Tuesday night, plays at Princeton in the Grand River Conference opener, on KTTN FM 92.3 and KTTN-TV.  On Friday night, the Lady Bulldogs welcome South Harrison to the THS gym for a 6 o’clock tip.

The boys game between the Bulldogs and Hornets stayed closer for a longer time, in comparison to the girls encounter, but the Hornets eventually pulled away from Trenton for a 54-35 win.  Cade Snyder had an off shooting night for the Hornets, but the senior guard still managed a game-high 15 points.  Todd Christo had the best game of his Chillicothe career, scoring 12 points off the bench, while Zach Trout added 10 points, Jack Willard 8, and Walker Graves 8.  The Hornets are 3-1 on the season.

Trenton, suffering its third consecutive loss, dips to 3-3.  Corbyn Guile scored 12 to lead THS, with Spencer Harris adding 11, and Connor Cotton nine. Only four Bulldogs scored in the road defeat.

Trenton’s boys have the exact same schedule as the Lady Bulldogs this week, playing three games at 7:30 PM, hosting Carrollton on Monday (KGOZ-TV), traveling to Princeton on Tuesday (KTTN FM 92.3 and KTTN-TV), and hosting South Harrison on Friday.
