Chillicothe Lady Hornets, battling Friday night fatigue, win third place at Savannah Tournament

High School Basketball

The Chillicothe Lady Hornets improved to 2-2 on the young season by winning their final tune-up before traveling to play state-ranked, unbeaten Trenton on Thursday, winning third place in the Savannah Tournament on Friday night with a 54-43 win over Maryville.

A Lady Hornet group that played an extremely physical game less than 24 hours earlier against Savannah battled through noticeable fatigue throughout the game, but found enough scoring punch, led by sophomore Hunter Keithley and junior Kennedie Kieffer, to earn the victory.  Keithley, younger sister of last year’s starting point guard Karson Keithley, had a game-high 18 points, while Kieffer, a 6’0″ junior post, added 15.  Jordan Hibner had 10 points, including eight in the second half, for CHS.  The Lady Hornets next game should be in front of a packed house, as #2 ranked, 4-0 Trenton hosts the Lady Hornets on Thursday, December 7th at 6 o’clock.   The game from the THS gymnasium will be broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3.

For Maryville, junior guard Emma Baldwin had 11 points while freshman guard Serena Sundell and freshman forward Emily Cassavaugh both contributed nine.

The St. Joseph Central JV won the 5th place girls game, while the Savannah boys took a close win over Benton to win the 5th place boys game on Friday night.

On Saturday afternoon, Maryville and LeBlond play for the boy’s third place hardware at 1 o’clock, followed by Savannah and Staley in the girls title game at 2:30, with Chillicothe playing Platte County in the boy’s championship game at 4 o’clock.
