Lathrop spoils Trenton’s home debut with Friday night shutout

High School Football

The Lathrop Mules held the Trenton Bulldogs to just three first downs in a dominating defensive performance on Friday night at C.F. Russell Stadium, with the up-and-coming KCI Conference squad winning 23-0, in a game broadcast on Hot Country Z 101.7.

Trenton’s defense, while not quite as effective as Lathrop, was effective in slowing down the Mules for the first three quarters, before the inability of the Bulldogs to move the football wore down the defense, with the Mules able to take advantage of short fields to score twice in the final quarter to put the contest on ice.

Here is Trenton Head Coach Brandon Boswell:

After a scoreless first quarter, Lathrop’s Justin Burns hit a 22 yard field goal to open the scoring on the first play of the second quarter, and extended the lead to 9-0 late in the half, on a 12 yard scoring plunge by Justin Wright.

Junior halfback Seth McKnight scored twice in the fourth quarter, on runs of 29 and seven yards, finishing with 76 yards on the ground for the Mules. Justin Wright had 41 yards rushing and Hunter Sloan 27 for the winning side.

Trenton’s Lathan Croy amassed 29 yards rushing, while going 2 of 6 passing for 28 yards, with the Bulldogs passing game slowed by the absence of starting receivers Colton Colston (military duty) and Avery Cooksey (injury).  Carson Radcliff gained 26 yards on the ground for THS.

Trenton, now 0-1 on the season, will take on Lexington on the Minutemen’s home turf at Gil Rector Stadium this Friday night at 7.  Lathrop, now 1-0, will welcome the South Harrison Bulldogs to LHS for the Mules home opener on Friday night.  South Harrison comes off a 56-30 loss to East Buchanan, while Lexington hammered Skyline on Friday night, 54-7.
