Snakebitten Bulldogs see season end with shutout loss to Marceline

High School Softball Local Sports

Having scored six runs in a late-season regular season loss to Marceline, the Trenton Lady Bulldogs came into Saturday afternoon’s district semifinal rematch against the Tigers confident that their offense could put up runs against the Class 2 two-time defending state champions.

While Trenton had ample opportunities to score, the Lady Bulldogs failed to find a clutch run-scoring hit in a 6-0 loss, ending the season with a record of 14-10.

Trenton left the bases loaded in the first inning, while Marceline had a solo homer in the bottom half to grab an early lead.  Two batters later, another long ball left the park, pushing the advantage to 2-0.

A two-run homer in the 4th inning that immediately followed the only Bulldog error in the contest, a dropped pop-up to the pitching circle, made the score 4-0.

For THS, Avery Clark pitched six innings, and despite giving up the three homers, generally pitched well against one of the most offenses in the state, allowing only five hits and striking out six.

In Saturday’s opener, the GRC champion South Harrison Lady Bulldogs defeated Brookfield 11-5, sending South Harrison into Monday night’s 5:30 final against Marceline at Trenton High School’s Ebbe Sports Complex.
