Trenton’s Werthen Gass finishes 5th in Section 3 tournament, qualifying for state

The Macon Tigerettes and Mexico Lady Bulldogs took the top two spots in Monday’s Class 1, Section 3 girls golf tournament at the Green Hills Course in Chillicothe, advancing their entire teams to next week’s state tournament at the Columbia Country Club.  Macon’s Paige Hawkins, with an 18-hole score at 7 strokes over par (79), won the Section 3 championship, while Penney High School’s Samantha Cornelius and Trenton High School’s Werthen Gass both finished in the top 5, advancing to the state meet.

Gass shot a 14 over par round of 86 to finish in 5th place individually, two strokes behind fourth-place Abigail Boyer of Kirksville, and three strokes behind third-place Kylah Gore of Mexico.  Cornelius, from Penney High of Hamilton, was second, with a score of nine-over par 81.

Chillicothe’s Hallie Jones shot 20 over par 92 to finish in 9th place on her home course, advancing to the state meet in Columbia, along with three members of the GRC champion Gallatin Lady Bulldogs, in Megan Cox (6th place / 89), Sarabeth Michael (10th place / 93), and Kelli Lynch (12th place / 98).  Putnam County’s Molly Jo Parker, at 28 over par 100, finish 16th place to move on to state, along with Brookfield’s Laken Sattman, with an 18th place finish, and a score of 29 over par 101.

The Class 1, Section 4 tournament was played at the Mozingo Golf Course in Maryville on Monday, with Pembroke Hill (375) and Maryville (389) advancing to state.  The four other schools in the team chase (in addition to Macon and Mexico) will be Logan-Rogersville, Mount Vernon, John Burroughs, and Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau).  Stanberry’s Allison Marticke, with a 16th place place finish at 31 over par, will represent the Lady Bulldogs program and the Grand River Conference in the state meet.  India Gaume of Pembroke Hill was individual medalist at 4 over par.

The Class 1 state tournament will be played on Monday, October 9th and Tuesday, October 10th in Columbia.
