Mercer girls, Winston boys, claim weather-delayed HDC Tournament

After cold and icy weather conditions postponed the semifinal round of the HDC Conference Tournament for three consecutive week, officials in Galt were able to complete the annual event with 12 games over a two-day period, concluding with the championship games on Saturday night at Grundy County High School.

In Friday night’s semifinal round, the Mercer girls beat North Harrison 53-24, while the host Grundy R-5 Lady Panthers were upset by #3 seed East Harrison in a 59-51 overtime thriller.

In the boys semifinals, Winston, behind 24 points from Jacob Lewis, beat Grundy R-5 74-41, with Mercer winning a low-scoring affair with North Harrison 47-26.

On Saturday, the Netwown-Harris Tigers won the 7th place games, with the Lady Tigers downing Gilman City, 41-35, while the Newtown-Harris boys beat Tri-County 45-38.

In the consolation finals, the Winston girls defeated Tri-County 53-40, while the East Harrison boys triumphed over Gilman City, 72-58.

The Grundy R-5 girls won third place over North Harrison 47-33, with the North Harrison boys thrilling a one-point affair over Grundy R-5 for third place, 46-45.

The Mercer girls routed East Harrison in a lopsided championship game on Saturday night, 69-25, with the Winston boys beating Mercer by a score of 51-37.
